Residents in two districts of La Laguna face a daily struggle when navigating the Ronda Road (TF-13) section known as The pits. This area is riddled with potholes, uneven patches, cracks, and bumps, posing a significant danger to all travellers and causing immense discomfort to those who use this route daily.
Over 22,000 vehicles and more than 100 pedestrians pass through this area daily, connecting various neighbourhoods with a combined population of over 36,000 residents.
An outraged resident took to Facebook to share photos of the deteriorating road conditions, condemning the authorities for allowing such a situation to persist. “This cannot go on. The people here deserve better,” the resident expressed.
The criticism also extended to the local government, as the new Tenerife Island Council completes its first year in power, with residents stating that blaming the previous administration is no longer a valid excuse.
Neighbours who joined the conversation on social media expressed their shared concerns and frustration, describing the road’s current state as “appalling,” “backward,” “unacceptable,” and “disgraceful.”
Many affected individuals highlighted the damage caused to vehicles due to the road’s poor condition and lack of maintenance. They also raised issues with the poorly maintained sewers along the Tegueste route, where despite new asphalt, the drainage system remains problematic.
Comments such as “This is beyond belief,” “Complete neglect,” “Even a dirt track would be an improvement,” and “The town is being abandoned” reflected the severity of the situation.
In response to the public outcry, Patricia Negrón, the councillor for the Canarian Coalition in the La Laguna City Council, assured residents that the road resurfacing is scheduled for the first half of August.
However, some sceptical residents have drawn parallels to past delays in infrastructure projects, questioning the authorities’ ability to fulfil their promises.
The community is eagerly awaiting a swift resolution to this crisis, as the current state of the road poses a threat to safety and diminishes the quality of life for all those who rely on it.
