The Guiniguada Theatre is gearing up for the 2024 Replica Awards ceremony and is showcasing three of the nominated performances this week, as a prelude to the grand awards gala taking place on Sunday, 28th July at 5:00 pm at the Auditorium in Tenerife.
Following the great success of the start of the so-called “Exhibition Phase” of the Replicas at the La Granja Space in Tenerife, this week the Canarian theatre is moving to Gran Canaria to enjoy the last three performances of the finalists from today until Saturday, 27th July.
The curtain will rise this Thursday with “Lo que trajo la tormenta” by La Sastrería Teatro. It is a dark comedy written by Carlos De León, directed by Rafael Rodríguez, and with musical and sound direction by Jonay Armas. The play originates from the natural catastrophe of the volcanic eruption that shook the island of La Palma in September 2021 to develop an almost apocalyptic piece where the volcano is the least of the evils afflicting the population on the fictitious island of San Bartolo del Desaguadero, where the plot of “Lo que trajo la tormenta” unfolds.
Following that, on Friday 26th, La Escrig Producciones takes over with the performance “Yo maté a Kurt Cobain.” During the representation, Marta, a 46-year-old woman suffering from insomnia, engages in nightly chats with a 16-year-old girl, Martita, as they try to unravel the great mystery that has haunted them since puberty: Who killed Kurt Cobain? But the performance is more than a musical journey through the 90s, as it also highlights one of the great afflictions affecting our young people and teenagers: depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, and suicide prevention.
The final showcase of the 2024 Replica Awards will be “Donde no habita el olvido” by the company La Intempesta. This show aims to give voice to the female artists and intellectuals of the 20s and 30s of the 20th century, who were relegated to oblivion during the Franco regime and later in the transition period, known as “Las Sinsombrero,” to make their essential and highly personal artistic and intellectual contributions visible.
Therefore, the performance will serve to get to know and re-recognize a group of these women. Ángeles Santos will show us her feminist and transgressive vision through her painting. Josefina de la Torre, now aged, will travel back in time to warn herself about the forgetfulness they will be subjected to. Lucía Sánchez Saornil, a poet during the Battle of Madrid, will tell us about her life through the sounds of grenades. Marga Gil Roësset, the Niña Genio, will depict her last night of life while sculpting her mentor Zenobia de Camprubí. And the painter Maruja Mallo will make an appearance in the theatre to be interviewed and reveal, amid a thick fog of forgetfulness, the cultural significance of the circle they all weaved together.
Tickets for these shows are available for purchase on the website here.
The Replica Awards, sponsored by the Government of Canarias, the Tenerife Island Council, the Gran Canaria Island Council, Auditorium de Tenerife, and the SGAE Foundation, are the most important awards in the Performing Arts in the Canary Islands. They were created in 2009 by the Replica Association to recognise the work of companies and professionals in the performing arts in the archipelago.
This year, the Gran Canaria company Unahoramenos Producciones leads the nominations in almost all categories for its productions Mararía, La de Femés, and Protocolo del Quebranto, all directed by Mario Vega, the company’s director and founder.
