The Tenerife Island Council is set to manage approximately 50,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste at the new facility located in the Tenerife Environmental Complex (Arico). The construction work, requiring an investment of about 1.2 million euros, will commence tomorrow, Thursday. This development will enable the reception of domestic construction and demolition waste for sorting and subsequent utilization in covering and sealing landfill cells.
Rosa Dávila, the President of the Cabildo, highlighted, “We are spearheading a transformation in waste management in Tenerife. In addition to the ongoing leachate plant works, construction will kick off tomorrow for a new Construction and Demolition Waste Treatment Facility. This initiative aims to establish a new waste management centre for domestic waste, thus preventing unlawful dumping on roads, highways, or trails. Moreover, it will cater to the requirements of the Tenerife Environmental Complex by acquiring and valorising these aggregates for its waste management operations. This strategy allows us to make progress in the waste management model devised for the Island.”
The Minister for the Environment, Sustainability, Safety, and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, stated that the new facility will cover an area of about 5,500 square metres and have the capacity to process around 50,000 tonnes annually. Out of this total, approximately 45,500 tonnes can be recycled as aggregates, with the remainder utilised in producing other valuable materials like wood, metals, plastics, or glass.
Alejandro Molowny, the director of Waste on the island, outlined that the operations at the new facility will be executed in three distinct phases to achieve the desired outcomes. “Initially, the recyclable materials (wood, metals, plastics, and glass) will be sorted and cleaned, followed by the crushing and grinding of inert materials. Eventually, the materials will be stored for use in covering and sealing landfill cells.”
The new Construction and Demolition Waste Treatment Facility at the Tenerife Environmental Complex will include a dedicated waste treatment zone, alongside an office, parking area, workshop, and warehouse.
