The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in collaboration with the Mobility and Anaga district councils, has announced the positive impact of the new bus lane leading to Las Teresitas beach. The initiative has significantly increased the number of passengers opting for public transport to visit San Andrés and the beach area.
A recent analysis of bus occupancy data reveals a notable 16% rise in passenger numbers since the introduction of the bus lane to Las Teresitas. Evelyn Alonso, the Mobility Councillor, reported that over the past weekend, more than 23,000 passengers used the bus services during the three days of the trial period. This marks an 11% increase from the previous weekend, where 20,816 passengers utilised public transport, and a 16% surge compared to the days of July 5th, 6th, and 7th when the bus lane was inactive.
During the trial phase, Mobility officials identified a recurring issue when the beach car park reached full capacity, leading to difficulties for incoming drivers seeking parking spaces. To address this concern, Alonso stated, “The situation will improve once we install sensors that indicate parking availability. This project is currently in the tendering phase and will provide real-time information on the status of the car park.”
Specific data for the days when the bus lane was operational showed that on the trial weekend without the lane, Line 910 (Interchange-Las Teresitas) had 7,201 passengers on Friday, 6,104 on Saturday, and 6,313 on Sunday. In comparison, on the weekend following the lane’s activation, the line served 7,646, 7,035, and 6,135 passengers respectively. The most recent weekend saw a further increase with 8,721, 7,602, and 7,156 passengers on each day.
The data also highlight a rise in public transport usage, with a 16% increase in passenger numbers during the last weekend with the bus lane compared to the previous one without it, from 19,618 passengers to 23,479 passengers.
Both Evelyn Alonso and Gladis de León, the councillors for Mobility and the Anaga district, recommend the use of public transport for those heading to Las Teresitas beach in the capital this weekend. Although the bus lane will not be operational, with the trial set to resume in August, they emphasize the importance of continued reliance on public transport for beach visitors.
