SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 22 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The leader of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, has emphasized the need to focus on “greater attention, administration, and maximum protection” for the Garajonay National Park. Following the inauguration of the new exhibition hall at the Juego de Bolas Visitors Centre, he highlighted the beginning of “a new phase” that should address the challenges that lie ahead for this conservation area.
Highlighting the urgency of certain issues that cannot be delayed any further, some of which are crucial for determining the future of Garajonay,” Curbelo stressed the importance of allocating more human and financial resources, as well as expanding the park’s territory. In relation to this last point, he urged for “consensus from all parties” to approach this task collectively involving the local councils, the Cabildo, the Canary Islands Government, and the community of La Gomera.
He outlined the challenges faced by a delicate ecosystem that is in a constant state of evolution, with fires, climate change, and water scarcity being its primary threats. In this context, he highlighted the collaborative efforts of public authorities in implementing measures to mitigate their impact on the park’s ecosystem.
Curbelo acknowledged the importance of immediate planning with regards to accessibility to vulnerable areas such as El Cedro, stressing the necessity to advance with regulatory frameworks that ensure vehicle access without causing harm to the environment.
He underlined the need to transition towards a management model that involves granting authority to the Island Council, “as long as sufficient resources are provided to deliver a high-quality service in terms of conservation and efficiency.” In this regard, he expressed hope for swifter progress in this direction moving forward, as “the people of La Gomera are the true guardians of this treasure.”
