VALVERDE (EL HIERRO), 18 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
This year, the breeding centre for giant lizards on El Hierro has surpassed its own egg-laying record, with a total of 12 instances resulting in the birth of 112 eggs, as per data released by the island council on Thursday.
Furthermore, one individual female has achieved the feat of laying 19 eggs, setting a new all-time high for the centre and surpassing the previous record of 16 eggs per laying, shared the centre’s biologist in charge, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez.
The centre anticipates that one of the remaining females will contribute with eggs to fulfil the yearly plan, and it is predicted that the hatchlings will emerge in early September following a two-month incubation period.
“This process plays a crucial role in the conservation and safeguarding of this iconic species native to the island of El Hierro,” affirmed Jesús Pérez, the island’s Environment Councillor.
