Yesterday, the Virgen del Carmen embarked from the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to cruise along the capital’s coastline in celebration of her special day, a maritime parade marking 105 years of existence. The patron saint of fishermen and sailors was joined by over 50 boats on her traditional route.
Hundreds of individuals accompanied the portrayal on its feast day, festivities that kicked off at 6:00 p.m. with a mass at the La Concepción church before proceeding to the Dársena de Anaga, led by the Municipal Band and escorted by the Local Police in their Grand Gala attire.
Upon reaching the waterfront, the Virgin was welcomed by the president of Puertos de Tenerife, Pedro Suárez, and the city’s mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, who cast a wreath of flowers into the sea in honour of those who lost their lives at sea and in port activities.
The cheers and applause from the faithful, along with the horns of the boats, fell silent as the Virgin was lifted onto the tugboat, accompanied by the poignant Ave Maria. Following the procession, the portrayal returned to its parish amidst a fireworks display held in its honour.
