Alpidio Armas, the president of the Cabildo of El Hierro, has expressed his surprise at the absence of volcano legislation in the Canary Islands and has urged for the new legislation to have a broader scope, including considerations for underwater volcanoes, seismic activity, and clarification of authorities.
Enrique Pérez, the Waste Councillor of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, emphasised the need to proactively address the impacts of a volcanic eruption. He praised the new legislation for ensuring the rights of those affected.
María Inés Navarro, the Territorial Policy Councillor of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, has voiced her support for the upcoming legislation as it will provide a framework for future administrations to handle “catastrophes” like the recent one in La Palma.
Rosa García, the Education Councillor for the Cabildo de La Gomera, acknowledged the challenging circumstances facing society in La Palma and endorsed the measures outlined in the legislation to aid in the economic and social recovery of the island.
Emphasising the importance of focusing on the affected individuals to facilitate the recovery of lost assets, she noted that the legislation has been effectively crafted to safeguard rights.
Pablo Díaz, the Culture Councillor of the Cabildo of La Palma, commended the initiative as a model of how communities can contribute to legislation during times of crisis, such as the recent hardships faced in La Palma.
He cautioned that future volcanic eruptions in the Canary Islands are inevitable, hence the legislation is crucial in preparing for and responding to such events swiftly to protect the rights of those impacted.
José Miguel Ruano, the Councillor for the Presidency and Planning of the Cabildo of Tenerife, acknowledged the challenges in meeting the demands of the Cabildo of El Hierro, particularly concerning jurisdictional matters. He highlighted the contributions made by the approved decree laws towards enriching the upcoming legislation and extended the councils’ support to the lawmakers in its formulation.
