The capital of Tenerife has already activated eight out of the 23 intelligent pedestrian crossings that will be installed in the city. Specifically, these are situated on Núñez de la Peña Street, with three crossings; San Andrés, Añaza, Doctor de la Rosa Perdomo, in the Cuchillitos de Tristán area, along with the recently started works for the two crossings on Numancia Street. Work is also scheduled to commence today for the installation of crossings on Tomé Cano Street.
The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, stated that “this is the natural progression of our capital towards the Smart City concept, embracing innovation and technology to facilitate the automatic and efficient management of urban traffic flow” and he added that “the intelligent pedestrian crossings are a new system that includes two illuminated plates, one at each end of the white pedestrian crossing line, which are activated by the presence of pedestrians”.

On the other hand, Mobility Councillor Evelyn Alonso highlights that “works will continue on Tomé Cano Street, involving interventions on the road in the centre of the carriageway. At least one traffic lane will be kept open at all times, with traffic being redirected through the adjacent parking area. The work is expected to last a minimum of eight days.”
Regarding the crossings near educational institutions, the aim is to enhance route accessibility with improved road safety measures. This means that the vertical illuminated signs remain active throughout the day, and at night, they synchronize with public lighting, with the illuminated signals on the road activating as soon as a pedestrian enters the vicinity.
The installation of intelligent pedestrian crossings, which are designed to reduce accident-prone areas, requires an investment of 340,000 Euros.
