Residents of Tenerife now need to pay for their Masca visit

Starting from yesterday, inhabitants of Tenerife are required to make a payment to access the gorge of Chew, as displayed on the website where visit reservations are made. On the booking platform, a differentiation is made between Canarian residents and non-residents based on the guidelines set by the Governing Council.

Tenerife residents are granted free entry, however, they must pay a fee online of 3.21 euros (including IGIC) to secure the activity booking. This amount will be refunded to them once they arrive at the entrance. The website specifies that “at the access control, upon residency verification, the reimbursement process will be initiated”.

The Tenerife Island Council has introduced a new initiative on Friday 12th July, implementing an eco-tax in Masca ravine and the pier to manage the growing demand for visits to this area within the Teno Rural Park.

It is estimated that Masca will receive approximately 275 daily visitors, with access only available from Friday to Sunday, totaling 825 weekly visitors and 3,300 monthly visitors.

Entry is nominative, requiring a name and identification (ID or passport), and can be purchased via the website www.caminodelbarrancodemasca.com.

PRICING

Entrance fees, inclusive of IGIC:

  • Tenerife resident – free
  • Adult resident of the Canary Islands – 3 euros
  • Child resident of the Canary Islands – 1.50 euros
  • Non-resident adult – 28 euros
  • Non-resident child – 14 euros

Residents of Masca are exempt from paying for access to Camino del Barranco and are allowed entry in a coordinated manner.

Inclusions

  • Information, registration, and guidance from the Masca Visitor Centre to the pier for descent or from the pier to the Caserío for ascent.
  • Assistance from security personnel throughout the journey, including first aid and rescue support in emergency situations.
  • Accident insurance.
  • Provision of protective helmets for head protection.

Exclusions

Round-trip transportation to and from the starting and ending points of the route (Los Gigantes or Punta de Teno) is not covered in the eco-tax price. Therefore, passengers need to purchase boat tickets for sea departure through the same platform. The cost of transport by the collaborating maritime company is separate from the tax.

DAYS AND TIMINGS

The service will initially operate on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with trips available only for descent via sea transport (from the village to the pier).

A daily ascent trip is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. for users interested in the ascending activity.

TRANSPORTATION

The eco-tax does not cover the round-trip transportation to and from the route’s start and end points (Los Gigantes or Punta de Teno). Passengers must separately purchase boat tickets through the platform for sea departure. The Cabildo envisions including bus transfers to Masca from Los Gigantes and Buenavista by the end of this year to ease access and alleviate traffic congestion.

In the future, passengers will also need to acquire a bus ticket for discretionary access to Masca through the website platform.
