SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 11 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister for Social Policy, Families and Equality of Murcia, Concepción Ruiz, expressed on Wednesday that the Sectoral Conference on Children and Youth held in Tenerife was “underwhelming” due to the central government’s imposition on the distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors.

Addressing the media after the meeting, she mentioned that Murcia is prepared to accommodate 16 minors but emphasized that the region faces unique challenges as a prominent point of entry for immigration. Murcia currently houses a camp in a former naval hospital with a capacity for 700 individuals, more than 200 of whom are minors.

“Murcia lacks sufficient space to host more minors, and it is the Government’s responsibility to propose alternative solutions rather than imposing decisions that were not considered when the camp was not operational in the hospital and the current influx of migrants had not yet occurred,” she elaborated.

Ruiz asserted that “merely distributing and sharing minors as if they were commodities will not solve the issue. The solution lies in dialogue with Europe and the establishment of a contingency fund.”

Expressing disappointment, she noted that the Government provided inadequate time to review the immigration reform proposal, which was made public on Tuesday evening, stressing the importance of equality for all.
