SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister in charge of Children and Youth, Sira Rego, has today urged the President of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to “make room in his schedule” and visit a centre catering to migrant minors in the Canary Islands before forming an opinion on the modification of the immigration legislation to enforce reception.
Addressing journalists prior to the commencement of the Sectoral Conference on Children and Youth, she encouraged him to “meet the gaze of these children, who arrive here helpless and alone, and impress upon him that it is our duty, as a nation, to extend a dignified and comprehensive welcome to them across the entire territory.”
Rego expressed uncertainty about the stance he might encounter within the PP, given the rapid changes in opinion the party has undergone, contrasting this with the consistent stance of the government, which advocates for implementing a “systematic” resolution.
She lamented the absence of any representatives from the PP at the visit to a youth facility in Tenerife, while endorsing the Government’s “robust proposal” to devise a solution “backed by adequate financial resources and sustainable planning” to enhance public services and foster territorial equilibrium.
“There needs to be a mechanism of territorial unity within our nation. Among the children coming to Spain, no child should be neglected; this is a matter of human rights. Additionally, no region should be overlooked. The burden of such a situation cannot fall solely on the Canary Islands,” she remarked.
Addressing the voluntary referrals agreed upon for 2022 and 2023, she noted discrepancies of 40% and 80% respectively, indicating that the system is proving to be “ineffective.”
