The square and open spaces surrounding the 1,000 residences in La Salud neighbourhood of the capital are set to undergo a significant overhaul, including enhanced accessibility and the establishment of recreational and sports areas featuring bio-healthy elements, calisthenics, and children’s play areas.

The municipal Government Board gave the green light last Monday to the basic and execution plan for this renovation, which was submitted on December 29, 2023, by Antonio Gabriel Arbelo. The project has a budget of 3,743 million Euros and is scheduled to be completed within 24 months. Furthermore, it was decided to hand it over to the Technical Service of Urban Projects for preliminary revisions for its integration into the construction dossier.

In addition to revamping the square, there are plans to enhance the surrounding area’s accessibility, which will stretch across the landscaped zones of Güímar, Río Guadalate, Miguel Soto, Tacoronte, Pedro Bernardo Forstall, and Vía Cornisa streets. The goal is for these spaces to complement each other once the works, which will not be simultaneous, are completed, thus creating a modernized and accessible urban area.

The project’s proposal for the square and its vicinity dictates that the design of the entire area should strive, within the constraints of being an already established zone, to adjust the space as much as possible for universal accessibility. Additionally, the project entails installations for public lighting, electricity, potable water, sanitation, stormwater management, and irrigation networks.

The square is projected to be equipped with bio-healthy elements, calisthenics areas, enclosed children’s play spaces, shaded seating, and moisture-resistant treatment for the retaining walls, all while opting for low-maintenance solutions.

The total area covered by the project is approximately 5,850 m2, with the square occupying 3,700 m2 and the remaining 2,150 m2 allotted for outdoor gardens. The estimated total cost for all the works outlined in the project is around one million Euros.

The Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, emphasised that “the primary goal of this initiative is to enhance the square’s accessibility and its connections to the surrounding streets, as it is a public area with entries via staircases and only one access point through a ramp in its entire vicinity.”

Meanwhile, the Infrastructure Councillor, Javier Rivero, stated that “another key objective of the project is to breathe life into the square by providing children’s play areas and calisthenics spots for outdoor workouts.”

On her part, the councillor for the Salud-La Salle district, Zaida González, conveyed her “immense satisfaction with the inclusion of facilities that promote better accessibility and serve as a gathering spot for the residents in the square of the 1,000 houses.”
