SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 9th Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The local government of La Laguna has announced the suspension of all water festivals in the region following the declaration of a water emergency on the island. This decision aims to preserve the available resources and raise awareness among residents about the importance of responsible water usage, given the ongoing drought affecting the entire Canary Islands.
Dailos González, the councillor in charge of Festivities, expressed regret over the necessity of this measure, “especially in light of the weather forecasts predicting high temperatures this summer, which typically lead to increased water consumption across the population.”
“While we understand the significance of these water festivals as cultural symbols and attractions for various parts of our municipality, we trust that our residents will appreciate and support this decision, keeping in mind the well-being of future generations of Laguneros and Laguneras who will bear the consequences of our choices today,” added González.
On the other hand, Ángel Chinea, the Water Councillor, highlighted that “last year, we had to implement conservation and mitigation measures within our responsibilities, including restrictions on sports facilities and public irrigation areas, as well as the use of recycled water for construction purposes, street cleaning, and maintaining the sewer system.”
Chinea also emphasised the efforts of the Teidagua company in reducing losses in the water supply network and developing new water sources. Significant advancements have been made in this regard, such as the ongoing improvements at the Punta del Hidalgo treatment plant, which currently produces 60% of regenerated water for agricultural use. The goal is to reach 100% capacity by the year’s end, providing relief for coastal agriculture and substantial reductions in overall water consumption.
Lastly, the La Laguna City Council stresses the importance of implementing energy-saving practices in households to collectively contribute to this common objective. Recommendations include opting for a five-minute shower over a bath (saving up to 400 litres weekly) and always turning off the tap while shaving or brushing teeth.
Furthermore, using automatic car washes for vehicle cleaning and installing water-efficient faucets throughout the house are also advised, as these actions have a notable impact on reducing water consumption.
