The Ponds of Valleseco: The Ultimate Summer Destination in Santa Cruz

The ponds are “fantastic for walking without the hassle of sand blowing in the wind, as happens at the Las Teresitas beach,” states Chari Hernández as she walks through the Valleseco Ponds Area. The Santa Cruz resident attended a morning stroll punctually at 11 in the morning with her mother, in a wheelchair, and her daughter. “The concrete promenade is very comfortable to push the wheelchair,” is one of the aspects that stands out the most about this new space to enjoy with family. For people with reduced mobility, it opens up the possibility of taking walks near the sea, an activity that is limited at the sandy Las Teresitas beach in the capital due to the obvious impossibility of dragging wheels through the sand, and although Chari has not yet tried bathing in the ponds, she adds that they enjoy “taking walks by the sea a lot.”

After the inauguration of the Valleseco Ponds Area on March 10, four months have passed since Tenerife has had an additional bathing space in its capital. Before this new construction, the residents of Santa Cruz, for the most part, visited Las Teresitas beach or El Bloque because they were the most accessible areas in Santa Cruz. Toñi, who lives in Ofra, explains that she used to frequent these two areas because they were the closest to her home. However, the location of El Bloque between the port dikes generates, at times, dirt due to the waste generated by the port and discomfort to the residents who decide to resort to other bathing areas.

This is the case for Miguel García, a veteran resident of the Tenerife capital. García decided today to take his first dip in this new Ponds Area, which not only offers a novel option to cool off on the coast but opens the doors to the sea for an island city that suffers from constructions that have closed its access to the coast. With the new bathing area, Santa Cruz now has at least 272 meters more to enjoy the sea and all its benefits, especially now with the arrival of summer and a more demanding demand from citizens to cool off on hot days.

Miguel García’s morning consisted of a refreshing dip in a busy, yet not crowded, Valleseco Ponds Area. Other times, he usually refreshes himself at El Bloque, but the rough tide and the dirt that usually comes from the port towards the shore forced him to change his morning ritual and debut in this new area. “More than a beach, it’s like a swimming pool because of the calmness of the water,” García affirms while enjoying a serene and sunny morning on wooden and concrete slabs facing the sea. Around 11 in the morning, he changed back into his usual attire and set out to take a walk along the promenade with a “very positive” first impression of the new space.

Future Opening of a Café

The Valleseco Ponds Area features protective dykes, jetties, two squares, two floating sun decks, shaded areas, garden areas, and a service building, among other facilities. Its location is ideal for some visitors like Leonor Yánez. “We have the mountains in the background and the ships and the sea in front of us, what more could we want,” she expresses leaning against one of the concrete walls while watching the manoeuvres of a bulky Armas vessel trying to enter the port. Also planned as a future project is the installation of a café, as for the moment, only the so-called food trucks that bring food and drink to the area on weekends.

The overall impressions were of total satisfaction. Swimmers like Eneida Dorta described their experience at The Ponds with a simple phrase: “I’m delighted, it’s wonderful.” Dorta highlights the proximity to her home as one of the key reasons why she goes to the coast every day. Now, her routines include a visit to The Ponds to which she has “no complaints.” Now, sitting on one of the concrete benches with her all-inclusive beach bag, where she keeps her bag of nuts, her water, and other beach accessories, she asserts under her sun hat, which protects her from the sun: “Since I discovered them, I haven’t stopped coming.”

Opinions for enhancing the space

After about four months in which both the residents of Santa Cruz and other curious islanders have experienced the Valleseco Ponds, there are some criticisms that suggest the area could offer greater advantages. Firstly, there is the issue of parking. Chari Hernández confesses that, “parking is difficult, especially for those of us who come with children or elderly people.” The area has a small car park in addition to the Anaga avenue parking. But the truth is that there are limited spaces and sometimes it is not viable to access The Ponds. “If there is no parking, then I go to Las Teresitas,” Toñi concludes, as long as it is near the sea, she considers it a valid option.

An additional problem is the access to the sea for elderly people. Juan José González, aged 73, is very pleased with the new bathing area and claims to enjoy the sunny days by the coast. However, he also recounts challenging moments when trying to access the water. “When you descend the sea stairs, there are steps that are not visible, and one time I hit myself with the railing” , he describes.

Luis, who resides in Santa Cruz, also laments about the final step of access to the sea at one of the stairs near Los Charcos, which, when the tide is low, becomes a true climbing challenge to ascend. “It reaches your chest height and you need to push yourself to get up, it is difficult for the elderly,” he concludes.

Lastly, Isabel, Esther, and Chaxiraxi are three friends who have been frequenting this space for a month. Their case is unique as they visit accompanied by their babies who are only a few months old. They believe that a bit more shade could have provided greater accessibility for mothers. “We have to stick to the wall because it is the only way for us to get shade,” highlights Isabel.
