Europe’s largest and most significant ocean festival, the International Ocean Film Tour, arrives in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with a special Canarian edition. The festival marks its 10th anniversary this 2024 and celebrates it on Sunday 14th July at 6 pm at the Teatro Guimerá in the capital of Tenerife with five documentary short films from four continents and several premieres in Spain.

The festival marks its 10th year with an edition marked by emotion and adrenaline, through first-person stories produced in South Africa, Austria, the United States, and Cuba. This edition is a journey to the wildest seas and the most radical landscapes on the planet, where the protagonists give their all in the harshest environments, in the most ambitious struggles with the shared goal of protecting the oceans and those who live in them, defending a sustainable and respectful way of enjoying them and showcasing the greatness above and below the surface.

IOFT 2024 takes on the challenge of the 42-time world champion, Bjørn Dunkerbeck, who will showcase the Canary Islands throughout Europe with his short film ‘Born to windsurf’, narrating his life and professional career, always linked to the island of Gran Canaria and always on a board. This time, the festival will accompany the champion and his family to their new challenge, to try to exceed 100 km/h in the Lüderitz Speed Challenge in Namibia. Bjørn’s short film, selected from hundreds of proposals from around the world, invites viewers on a journey through an island of sport, adrenaline, and impact, to rev up audiences not only in Tenerife but in over 16 cities across the country like Malaga, Alicante, Valencia, Barcelona, Santander, San Sebastián, Gijón, Madrid, Seville, Cadiz, Palma de Mallorca, or Menorca, and the 270 events planned in 18 countries across the continent.

‘Born to windsurf’ dives into Bjørn’s life in an Austrian production short film, where viewers can experience first-hand the contagious passion of the 42-time world champion for the sport in a new face-off with speed, in this case in the water channel of Namibia and alongside his son Liam, who follows in his father’s sporting footsteps. The festival, which is now fully immersed in its nationwide tour, has been filling cinemas and theatres across Spain, establishing itself as a unique festival of its kind.

Europe’s most renowned ocean festival faces a thrilling challenge in Tenerife.

Witnesses in Tenerife will also dive into the icy waters of the United States, where swimmer Melissa Kegler pushes her body to the limits by swimming two kilometres in waters below five degrees Celsius, without a wetsuit, in the extreme training location.

A Look into Sharks and Rays, Older than Trees

Explore a world where species have existed for over 400 million years, with sharks and rays that predate the Earth’s forests.

Experience the mesmerising journey of marine biologist James Lea, who has spent over two decades witnessing the drastic decline in shark populations, as he strives to protect marine areas known as ‘Hope Spots’.

The International Ocean Film Tour: A Glimpse into Life Below the Ocean’s Surface

Discover a unique storytelling experience where real individuals share their own life experiences, reflecting on love, respect, and environmental conservation.

The International Ocean Film Tour will host around 270 events in 18 countries worldwide, highlighting themes aligned with the United Nations’ Circular Economy 2030 Agenda.
