At its recent session, the La Laguna City Council approved the allocation of 10% of the urban development rights from the Public Land Exploitation Registry (PPS) for the construction of public housing, amounting to over 4 million Euros. The proceeds from the urban development activities will be utilised to support the development of new municipal housing projects in four neighbourhoods within the town.
In his statement, Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez stressed the importance of “implementing a housing policy that addresses the social needs of the community, undertaking all necessary actions and fostering collaboration to ensure efficient use of municipal resources.”
He further emphasised the urgency of continuing to carry out construction projects that help reduce the longstanding shortage of affordable housing in the area given the current housing market conditions.
Adolfo Cordobés, the Councillor for Land Use Planning, highlighted how this agreement allows the profits generated from urban planning to be reinvested into expanding the municipal housing supply.
“Through this agreement, and in compliance with the Canary Islands Land Law, a significant portion of building rights will be utilised for socially beneficial purposes such as facilitating affordable rental options and broadening housing access for families facing challenges meeting market demands.”
The initiatives include the development of 50 new residences in Tejina, 29 in Finca España, 72 in Los Barriales (Taco), and an additional 36 homes in San Honorato–El Centurión.
