Tenerife is strengthening its connections with Portugal through craftsmanship. Portugal will be the guest country at the seventh edition of the Tricontinental Fair from October 26 to November 3 at the Santa Cruz Exhibition Centre, with around 150 artisans participating. Efraín Medina, councillor for Employment and Education at the Cabildo, leads the island delegation who are finalising the details of Portugal’s presence at the international event in Lisbon.
The Lisbon City Council welcomed a delegation from the island yesterday to reinforce the already strong historical and cultural ties through the artisanal crafts of both territories. The reception for the Tenerife embassy is part of the preparations of the island’s Corporation for the traditional Tricontinental Fair, which will be dedicated to Portugal this year.
Following the reception in Lisbon, Efraín Medina stated that “for the Cabildo, it is a luxury and a historic day because we are seeing how Tenerife also plays a significant role on the world stage.” He also appreciated “intense and constant work that has brought us here to firsthand experience Portuguese artisanal skills.”
Guided by members of the Portuguese Federation of Arts and Crafts (FPAO), the representatives of the island will visit the Lisbon International Handicraft Fair on Sunday, July 7, the closing day, which hosts the largest multicultural variety among the fairs held in the Iberian Peninsula and the second in Europe. Medina highlighted that “we have made contacts for future artisanal meetings between Portugal and Tenerife.” In addition, the Portuguese Institute of Business and Vocational Training in Crafts also welcomed the islanders and “we are delighted,” the councillor emphasized, “looking forward to the great event that will be the Tricontinental Crafts Fair in October.”

The VII Tricontinental Crafts Fair in Tenerife has become a cultural bridge between Ibero-America, Africa, and Southern Europe, as well as a platform for the promotion and dissemination of creations on both sides of the Atlantic. The high attendance of artisans, the variety of products and techniques showcased, and the positive reception from the public position it as one of the most important events in the regional calendar. It represents the largest gathering for the commercialisation of foreign crafts among those held in Spain.

The Tricontinental Fair dedicated its monograph to Portugal, a country historically linked to the Canary Islands, which also boasts a wide range of artisanal production. Notable in their presence are ceramics and tiles, which adorn the main facades; carpets and tapestries; leather goods; embroidery; wood carving; jewellery; scale work; and pottery.

The fair maintains its international vocation as a showcase for Ibero-American and African handicrafts but enhances the European representation. It includes craftsmen from Tenerife and a representation from the rest of the islands. Over the nine days, there will be fun and festive activities to encourage both the public and participating craftsmen. Contests, workshops, experiences, displays, catwalks, musical performances, tastings, product launches, and meetings. With Portugal and its craftsmen as the backdrop.
