The proposal from the Urban Planning Department to designate 3,491.22 square metres of municipal land for the construction of affordable housing in La Laguna will be presented to the full council.

This initiative suggests the gratuitous transfer of six plots in Finca España, La Cuesta, Valle Tabares, Tejina and Taco to the Municipal Housing and Services Company (Muvisa) and the Canary Islands Housing Institute (Icavi). The total value of these assets owned by the City Council amounts to 1.7 million euros.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasizes that “providing access to housing is a significant challenge, a complex issue that, in La Laguna, we believe should be tackled with solidarity and a strong social focus, prioritising families facing socioeconomic hardships.”

Land Use Planning Councillor Adolfo Cordobés stated yesterday that “this is the first instance in the past decade where such a transfer of public land has been initiated, demonstrating our commitment to leveraging all available resources to expand the housing options for vulnerable families or those experiencing financial constraints in renting properties.”

The proposal entails the transfer of a 1,127.68 square metre plot on Pico Cho Canino Street in Finca España to Muvisa for the development of 29 affordable homes. Additionally, five other plots will be designated to Icavi to bolster the regional public housing inventory in the municipality.
