This morning, Minister for Youth and Childhood, Sira Rego, announced that the Sectoral Conference on Childhood and Adolescence has been rescheduled to next Wednesday, 10th July in Tenerife, instead of the 18th as originally planned.
The main aim, she noted, will be to discuss the amendment of article 35 of the Immigration Law to ensure that the Autonomous Communities receive unaccompanied migrant children in a “supportive and obligatory” way alongside the arrival regions.
Over the past few months, there has been a significant increase in the number of unaccompanied children arriving on the shores of the Canary Islands, surpassing the capacity of the archipelago’s facilities with about 6,000 individuals currently being accommodated by public services.
According to the Minister for Youth and Children, the migration phenomenon has transformed over recent decades into a “structural and dynamic” one. Rego argues that this shift necessitates a move from a crisis-driven and voluntary model to enduring and systematic measures, with a focus on placing human rights at the core of the process.
Apart from the Autonomous Communities, Rego has also extended invitations to the Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, for the meeting.
