In June, Unemployment Declined by 1,604 Individuals in the Canary Islands, a Decrease of 0.97%, Leaving 164,460 Unemployed

The number of registered unemployed individuals in Canary Islands decreased by 1,604 people in June, a 0.97% drop compared to the previous month. On an annual basis, there are 9,669 fewer unemployed individuals (-5.49%), bringing the total to 164,460 unemployed individuals in the islands, according to data released on Tuesday by the Ministry of Labour.

Of these, 85,459 are concentrated in the Las Palmas province, where registered unemployment decreased by 0.99% monthly, with 854 fewer individuals, and an annual decline of 6.04%, amounting to 5,494 fewer unemployed individuals.

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with 79,001 unemployed individuals, this figure decreased by 0.94% in the last month, removing 750 individuals from the unemployment list. Over the past year, it has seen a 4.89% decrease, with 4,065 fewer individuals belonging to this group.

Out of the 164,460 unemployed individuals in the Canary Islands, 127,649 are from the services sector, 14,769 from construction, 12,964 from the group without previous employment, 6,117 from the industry, and 2,961 from agriculture.

New Contracts

Last July, 1,186 workers from the services sector in the Canary Islands, 168 from construction, 148 with no previous employment, 58 from the industry, and 44 from agriculture, left the unemployment list.

The number of contracts signed in the islands in the sixth month of the year was 54,572, which is 1,654 more, an increase of 3.13%, compared to May. However, it was 2,361 fewer than those signed in the same month of 2023, reflecting a year-on-year decrease of 4.15%. Out of these, 23,700 were permanent contracts and 30,872 were temporary.

Las Palmas saw 27,760 contracts, 846 fewer than those signed in May and 1,558 fewer than in June 2023, while Santa Cruz de Tenerife recorded 26,812 contracts, which is 2,500 more than the previous month but 803 fewer than in June of the previous year.

During last May, 28,447 requests for unemployment benefits were submitted in the Canary Islands, out of which 24,138 were approved, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 92,931, with a total expense to public funds of 93.136 million Euros.
