A display couldn’t be more timely for its location. The exhibition “Island”, by Spanish photographer Will Corvara, is now open for viewing at the Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey hotel in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is showcased around the iconic Canarian courtyard inside the hotel, with free entry from 08:00 to 22:00h, until January 2025.

The collection offers a visual journey through the mysterious and unexplored features of the Canarian coasts, which Will Corvara captured over four years with an ambiguity and aesthetic ambition that many artists have sought in these landscapes, but few have achieved.

ISLAND

One of the most influential names in the national photographic scene, capable of blurring the boundaries between the figurative and the abstract. Born into a family of painters, he finds in black and white a visual tension that captivates the viewer. His contrasts, his framing, and his ability to “photograph things or situations that go unnoticed by the normal eye or by people with other interests,” as he defines it, gives this selection of photographs a new perspective on everything that surrounds an island; more specifically, the Canary Islands.

The clear reflections of a boat’s hull on the water, a sail waving in the wind, an aerial view of a catamaran’s wake, a fisherman’s nets, the viscous and whimsical texture of an octopus… All everyday images that, through Corvara’s lens, compel us to pause, reflect, and reposition ourselves among the familiar. “In each somewhat banal thing or situation, everything has its beauty and can be a protagonist at a given moment,” recognises the Madrid-based artist. In his snapshots, the details stand out for their own strength and for the opportunism of knowing when to shoot. An erudition, sensitivity, and creativity that make him a target for various collectors across Europe. Now, his works are also on display in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, for those who wish to acquire them or simply admire them.

IBEROSTAR HERITAGE GRAND MENCEY

For good content, a good container is also needed; this is the case with this exhibition, held in one of the city’s most historic buildings. With this exhibition, Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey becomes one of the most unique and characterful exhibition venues on the island, firmly rooted in local tradition. In fact, an exhibition is the major event that the Heritage Grand Mencey had not yet hosted, after decades of being the chosen venue for countless figures from high society, politics, culture, business, and even international royalty. It is easy to understand why: here, you can feel all the history and tradition of Canarian architecture, which blends masterfully with interior avant-garde.

Thus, by boosting Santa Cruz’s cultural scene, Iberostar reinforces its commitment to the island’s artistic development and establishes one of the gems in its portfolio, the Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey, as a reference in local social life.
