The degradation of the supporting structures of bridges B and C in Barranco de Santos at Plaza Europa and Avenida Marítima, respectively, has led the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council to declare an emergency for the reinforcement and rehabilitation of both bridges. The works are set to commence in July with a budget of 2,366,040 Euros and a completion deadline of 12 months.

Today, Monday, the Governing Board will approve this urgent measure based on a report from the city council’s Infrastructure service, which has deemed the intervention necessary to prevent any risks to pedestrians and traffic due to the deteriorating bridge structures.

The construction management contract has been awarded to Trazas Ingeniería for 67,970 Euros, with the execution entrusted to Freyssinet for 2,366,040 Euros, to be completed within one year.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasised the importance of these bridges for pedestrian and vehicular mobility in the municipality, stating that immediate action is required to address the structural issues.

Infrastructure Councillor Javier Rivero explained that the focus of the repairs will be on strengthening the lower parts of the bridge decks and pillars to enhance their load-bearing capacity.

Rivero highlighted the urgency of the situation, citing the advanced corrosion of the bridges’ structural components due to exposure to seawater and other environmental factors.

He pointed out that Bridge B, located beneath Plaza de Europa, supports daily vehicular and tram traffic, while Bridge C on Avenida Marítima, constructed of stone, has been affected by corrosive marine elements deteriorating the iron and concrete supports.

Rivero clarified that the initial underground works will not impact road traffic significantly. However, as the project progresses, there will be diversions and lane closures on the affected roads.

He stressed the critical nature of the repairs to prevent potential future disruptions in traffic that could lead to chaos in the city if the bridges were to close due to structural issues.
