The town of Granadilla de Abona enthusiastically celebrated LGBTIQA+ Pride Day yesterday with a diverse program of events that positioned the town as a focal point for advocacy in the southern region. This demonstrated the local commitment to solidarity and diversity, supported by both the city council and civil society, with attendees coming from other areas as well.
Carrying the theme of Granadilla Diversa, the day kicked off at 12:30 in the morning with the Equality and Diversity councillor, Ángela Villalba, leading the way alongside other members of the municipal government, staff, and the community. Villalba read the official statement at the Town Hall square, highlighting that it was a tribute to the unwavering dedication of individuals, social organisations, and institutions striving for a “fairer, more equal, and inclusive” society.
“Our role as the local government,” the councillor emphasised, “is to encourage a harmonious coexistence based on respect and tolerance, while actively working to eradicate homophobia, lesbophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and other forms of intolerance.”
Mayor Jennifer Miranda added that such initiatives are crucial “to progress towards genuine and effective equality for transgender individuals and to uphold the rights of all members of the LGBTQ+ community.”
The march commenced at 17:30, beginning in Plaza Magallanes and culminating in the town’s central square. There, attendees enjoyed a musical performance, a parade, and entertainment by the Los Guajeiros comparsa and batucada, as well as acts by Marcela Kaufman, Ezequiel Dibeló’s ballet, Drag Judith’s comedy show, and a captivating performance by Anastasia Letal, a renowned drag queen from Tenerife.
