The historical Fajardo cinema theatre, now known as the municipal theatre, located in Icod de los Vinos, was constructed in the 1950s and quickly became a prominent leisure destination significant not only for the municipality but also for the surrounding region, thanks to the exceptional quality of its performances. Following its acquisition by the local council, the theatre has undergone various refurbishments and enhancements to the seating area. However, it has become inadequate to meet the current requirements of such a cultural venue and therefore necessitates a comprehensive renovation. This renovation is aimed at expanding the facilities and equipping them with state-of-the-art lighting, sound, video, and stage equipment, while ensuring compliance with technical safety standards.

After several years of anticipation, this much-anticipated renovation is now within reach, thanks to a two million euros investment pledged by the Cabildo of Tenerife. This investment will facilitate the expansion of the stage area, both in height and depth, ensuring it meets the necessary standards to host a wide array of performances of varying styles and audience sizes. Additionally, it will involve the integration of all essential elements required for a modern public venue.

Furthermore, the project includes the addition of new dressing rooms and backstage spaces, the incorporation of existing bathrooms for the exclusive use of performers and staff, and the creation of a direct and safe access route to the amphitheatre floor via San Felipe Street in case of emergencies. Moreover, the currently unused seating area on this floor will be refurbished, leading to an increase in the theatre’s capacity, which currently stands at 420 seats.

The renovation plan also encompasses the refurbishment of the projection room located on a higher level. This renovation will cater to its existing purpose or explore alternative technical and spatial options for film screenings to align with contemporary technologies and industry demands.

These are the primary improvements scheduled to commence, with the city council also contributing 500,000 euros towards the project. While these are the key renovations outlined, there are additional essential works included in the overall project, set to be realised between 2025 and 2026, to optimise the entire property for public use.
