SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27 June (EUROPA PRESS) –

Astrid Pérez, the head of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, expressed her approval on Thursday regarding the agreement struck between PSOE and PP to update the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). She also emphasised the importance of avoiding any “confusion” between the various powers of the State.

During a press briefing to review the accomplishments of the first year of the parliamentary term, she highlighted that “governments and the State are distinct entities,” stressing that agreements should be reached to strengthen the democratic framework.

Pérez underlined the necessity for the State to “clearly delineate” the legislative, executive, and judicial branches to prevent any overlap, which she believes could potentially lead to the establishment of dictatorships, as seen in other nations.

The Parliament Speaker defended democracy as the “optimal” political system for Spain, despite its imperfections, and cautioned that any regression within the system should be wholly condemned by all parties involved.

She asserted, “We must not regress, particularly not in terms of the separation of powers or attempts to misuse one of these powers for political gain. Any such actions can only set our country back and deviate it from being truly democratic.”

Pérez stressed that “judicial authority should rest with the judiciary” and should remain free from political intervention.

“Politicians have no place in the judiciary; hence, I believe this is a positive decision. Subsequently, we shall scrutinise any errors made or if boundaries are crossed,” she remarked.
