SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27th June (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Island Council has announced a total investment of 1,961,202.85 euros in the complete rejuvenation of the former Benijos potato cooperative building, located in the upper area of the municipality of La Orotava.
During a recent technical visit to these premises, Vice President Lope Afonso and Minister for the Primary Sector Valentín González stated that “the aim of the Cabildo is to enhance and expand appropriate spaces for Tenerife farmers to store their potato harvests, making them more competitive in the market.”
The nearly two million euros investment includes the execution of three projects, comprising the refurbishment of warehouses for receiving, processing, storing, and marketing potatoes, the modernization of cold storage rooms within the facilities, and the revamp and modification of the low-voltage electrical system and consolidation of supplies for the Benijos agro-industrial complex, as per a statement from the Cabildo.
Lope Afonso and Valentín González disclosed that the Cabildo has already greenlit the first of these ventures, the warehouse refurbishment project, amounting to 767,913 euros, scheduled for completion by 2024.
Both individuals defined this action as “the initial phase in revitalizing these premises, addressing a longstanding demand from local farmers, in a region where potato cultivation holds significant economic importance, closely intertwined with the traditions and culture of the Shire.”
Moreover, the Cabildo will also advance the refurbishment projects of the cold storage rooms (1,099,856.62 euros) and the overhaul and alteration of the electrical system (93,463.23 euros), with the aim to “establish infrastructure that ensures efficient and sustainable usage, while providing farmers with a suitable location to store the potato harvest, granting them a larger scope for negotiation in the local potato production sales and marketing.”
