A manifesto was read at noon today at the entrance of the Insular Palace – decorated for the occasion with a lintel as a symbol of openness – closing the wound opened at the end of the previous mandate (2017-2023) between the Tenerife Council and the LGTBIQ+ collectives. Just before the Pride Day celebrations that take place every 28th of June, with the main event on the island tomorrow (5:30 pm) being the demonstration starting from Red Square in El Médano (Granadilla de Abona).
Yesterday, the Insular Government Council approved the basis and the call for grants to promote LGBTIQ+ diversity (2024) with a total amount of 80,000 Euros in the areas of Equality and Diversity. The objective is to support associative fabric for the development of projects aimed at raising awareness and training on these realities and assisting, supporting, accompanying, and intervening with the collective. The island’s president, Rosa Dávila, pointed out that “the amount of previous mandates is maintained with the novelty that the longer the project’s execution period, the grant will increase beyond the previous limit of 20,000 Euros.” She stressed that the aid is a sign of “the recovery of dialogue with the collectives” who “requested that it be an exclusive call for those working and acting in this field and not open to generalist NGOs.”
This “new stage in the fight for diversity” was sealed earlier this week with the meeting held by the president with representatives from the CanaryPride, Aperttura, Libertans, Diversas, and Chrysallis collectives. León highlighted the importance of developing joint and coordinated work because “there is still much to do in defending diversity, and it is the responsibility of the public bodies and administrations to commit to this fight.”
The slogan for this year’s LGBTIQ+ Pride Day on 28J is Pride opens doors, don’t close them. The campaign includes several events to raise awareness and visibility of LGBTIQ+ people. León emphasized that a new era is beginning, “marked not so much by quantity but by quality, not by showiness but by realities, diverse realities that, hand in hand with the first female president, are becoming a reality.”
A total of 24 posters are distributed throughout the island, including two on the tram, as well as seven LED screens in different locations and a digital initiative on social media.
Among the planned actions is the installation of a banner with the campaign’s poster image and the mentioned lintel representing an arch of diversity at the entrance of the Tenerife Council where the campaign slogan is reproduced. This will be the setting for today’s manifesto reading by the Pride Day collectives – advanced because tomorrow the Insular Corporation will hold the Plenary Session on the state of the island. Additionally, the Museum of Nature and Archaeology (Muna) will host the Festivalullo with pride on the 30th from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm with various performances. Entry will be free until reaching the capacity of 200 people.
Before that, the main event of the Pride calendar in Tenerife will arrive. It will be tomorrow in the south of the island. Specifically, starting at 5:30 pm, in Magallanes Square, known as Red Square in El Médano (Granadilla), the starting point of the demonstration. In parallel, the city council is organizing an extensive program of activities called Diverse Granadilla. The initiative will take place in different areas of the municipality today and on the 3rd, 9th, and 11th of July. It includes an institutional declaration, workshops, musical performances, and a literary meeting.
