SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 26th June (EUROPA PRESS) –

A sum of €16.2 million will be invested by the Government of Tenerife in the renovation works of the Plaza de la Basílica de Candelaria, scheduled to commence post-August with an estimated completion time of 36 months.

The renovations will cover an area of around 20,000 square meters, encompassing changes to the promenade and the vicinity of the Plaza de la Patrona.

President of the Government, Rosa Dávila, mentioned in a statement that “this is an essential and symbolic project for Tenerife and the city of Candelaria, given the status of the Basilica as a Cultural Interest Site, making it a significant stop for worship and pilgrimage for many locals who hold the Virgin of Candelaria in high regard.”

Mayor of Candelaria, Mari Brito, expressed her joy as this development brings the eagerly-awaited renovation of Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias closer to reality.

“This is a project that has been intensely worked on by both the Government and the City Council in recent years. With the works set to begin soon, we will respond to the demands of Candelaria’s residents and the annual pilgrims that visit us,” she highlighted.

The renovation plan for Plaza de la Basílica de Candelaria will impact approximately 19,425 square meters.

The works will be divided into three phases, starting with the promenade spanning 3,431 square meters; followed by the Plaza de la Patrona covering 13,640 square meters; and finally, the Plaza de los Artesanos occupying 2,354 square meters.

The enhancements include upgrading the hydraulic pipelines and sanitation systems in the area.

Additionally, plans include the construction of a new building in Plaza de La Patrona to host a religious museum, a versatile hall, and a tourist information centre, with a combined floor area of 1,073.31 square meters.

The main square, Paseo de San Blas, Cueva de los Camellos, and Antón Guanche Street will all receive new paving, with the pedestrianisation of Antón Guanche Street transforming it into an open linear space at its upper end.

Key features like the pilgrims’ fountain at the basilica entrance and the sculptural group of the Guanches by the sea will be preserved in the project.
