The Guía de Isora Local Government Collective Loses its Absolute Control

By Rodrigo Padilla and Juan Carlos Mateu.| A year after the pact between the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party in Guía de Isora came into effect, the ruling collective led by nationalist Ana Dorta has encountered a significant setback, forfeiting its complete domination in the city council.

As revealed by DIARIO DE AVISOS, David Agustín Reyes González, the second deputy mayor and councillor for Municipal Services, Health, Concessionaire and Service Companies, Works, Transportation and Human Resources, tendered his resignation last Wednesday – formally documented in the town hall’s records – to remain part of the Canary Coalition municipal group but retaining his position as a council member, turning him into an independent councillor.

The decision of the nationalist councillor has resulted in the loss of the group’s complete control, leaving them with 10 councillors (6 from the Canarian Coalition and 4 from the Popular Party), the same number as the socialist group headed by Josefa Mesa. The Socialists were just a few votes shy of an outright majority in the elections held on May 28, 2023. The combined support from the nationalists and populists ousted the PSOE opposition after 28 years in charge of the local administration, with Pedro Martín at the helm for 24 of those years.

Vote of No Confidence

According to town hall sources consulted by this publication, a “strengthened majority” of 12 councillors would be necessary for a vote of no confidence to succeed in the Isorano City Council, rather than the standard majority of 11 councillors. Alternatively, had the resignation come from a PP councillor (a different party from the mayor’s), 11 councillors would have sufficed.

The opposition, withholding comment until David Agustín Reyes makes a public statement, has highlighted the “fragility” of the current ruling collective under Ana Dorta, criticizing the town’s “lack of leadership” and diminishing influence within the island context.
