The Town Hall of La Orotava has announced on Friday that Los Patos beach will remain closed to the public throughout the summer due to landslides in the area.

In a statement, the Town Hall indicates that even though sanitation work has been carried out on the Los Patos Beach cliff in the past months after landslides occurred on the morning of December 25th, resulting in a temporary closure, the current situation does not guarantee safety for visitors.

The La Orotava Town Hall has undertaken various emergency works in the first six months of the year, but the situation remains unstable in several points and in an area very close to where beachgoers access the beach, posing a serious safety risk as new landslides could occur at any moment.

The note states that municipal technicians and specialized companies have assessed the current situation of the cliff and concluded that a larger-scale intervention is needed, involving a geological study to analyze potential measures to prevent further landslides that may endanger lives.

Officials from the town council have met with representatives of the Tenerife Island Council and the General Directorate of Coasts to assess the situation.

All administrations have agreed to keep the beach access closed, as the landslides occurred near the access stairs to the beach, and the opening of this access cannot be ensured.

The municipal note mentions that Los Patos beach is located within the Costa Acentejo natural area, so it is the responsibility of the Environment department of the Tenerife Island Council to conduct the necessary surveys to evaluate the measures to be implemented, including a geological study to assess the cliff’s condition.

It is also noted that both accesses to Bollullo beach and Ancón beach are open and in perfect condition, and the public is urged to respect the closure measures.
