The La Orotava City Council announced on Friday that Los Patos beach will remain closed to the public throughout the summer due to landslides in the area.

Local authorities have indicated that in recent months, sanitation work has been carried out on the Los Patos Beach cliff after the landslides that occurred on the morning of December 25, resulting in a temporary closure. However, the current situation of the cliff does not guarantee safety for individuals.

Emergency works have been carried out over the past six months, but the situation remains unstable at various points and in an area very close to where beachgoers access the beach, posing a serious safety risk as new landslides could occur at any moment.

Local technicians and companies specializing in such work have assessed the current state of the cliff and concluded that a more extensive intervention is necessary, involving a geological study to determine measures that can be taken to prevent further landslides endangering lives.

Officials from the municipal council have met with representatives from the Tenerife Island Council and the Coastal Directorate to analyse the issue and current situation. All authorities have agreed that the beach access should remain closed as the landslides occurred at the beach access staircase, and the opening of this access cannot be guaranteed.

Additionally, it is important to note that Los Patos beach is located within the Costa Acentejo natural area, making it the responsibility of the Environment Department of the Tenerife Island Council to conduct the necessary studies to evaluate the actions to be taken, such as a geological study to assess the cliff’s condition.

Restoring beach access is a priority for all authorities, but it will only be possible when safety conditions for individuals are met, which is not feasible for this summer. Therefore, the closure will remain in place throughout the summer season.

The local council reminds everyone that both the access to Bollullo beach and Ancon beach are open and in perfect condition, and urges the public to respect the closure measures. Anyone violating the closure measures to access the beach is not only risking their own life but also endangering the lives of emergency services that may have to rescue them. Therefore, the public is urged to adhere to the closure and access control measures for Los Patos beach.
