On Thursday, Rosa Dávila, the president of the Tenerife Cabildo, stated the intention to prioritise expanding the tram line to the Tenerife North-City of La Laguna airport and, in a subsequent phase, to the town of Tacoronte ahead of the development of the northern train.

According to Chain Being, the progress of public transportation in the northern area offers “different solutions” compared to the south, where plans for the train are “well progressed” and only require updates and secure funding.

Regarding the southern region, the priority lies in constructing the San Isidro-Adeje section, which will enhance the connection between the airport and a heavily trafficked tourist area, as part of a broader project aimed at reaching Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Dávila emphasised that the project is well-defined, including impact assessments, and the goal now is to integrate it into the national rail network to secure funding, which she sees as a matter of fairness.

“This is our request, and efforts are being made to ensure that alignment, so that the archipelago, specifically the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, are part of the network and have equal access,” she underscored.

The railway construction projects could be tendered before the end of the legislature in 2027, as per the estimations of the Department of Public Works and Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands, provided they are integrated into the national network and can access EU funding.
