A devastating flood hit the capital on March 31, 2002, with 232 litres of water per square metre pouring down in just 24 hours. This thunderstorm claimed eight lives and caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and belongings, with the La Alegría neighbourhood bearing the brunt of the impact on that fateful day.
22 years have elapsed since that tragic event, yet the City Council of the capital continues to progress with legal procedures concerning municipal properties left in ruins following the heavy rains in this district.
Javier Rivero, the Councilor for Heritage, disclosed during a scrutiny session last Thursday in response to inquiries from socialist councilor Florentino Guzmán, that “a contract has been granted for the legal rectification of ownership of municipal real estate, including those affected by the floods, a process that is still underway.” He emphasised the importance of examining this aspect “as a preliminary step before undertaking any interventions, as the aforementioned legal rectification is being pursued.”
