Güímar and Guía de Isora are the only two municipalities in the region not included in the emergency plan to enhance educational infrastructures in the South, which comprises 27 measures and requires an investment of 77.7 million euros. In the case of Güímar, the Town Hall is forwarding its requests to the Education Department, which includes the construction of a centre and interventions in six others.
Haridian Martín, councilor of the area, explains that the Güímar city council is working closely with the department to improve the facilities of the educational centres in the municipality. Specifically, the councilor states that “a document with contributions to the regional plan has been presented.”
Within the same, Güímar requests a Compulsory Education Centre (CEO) in El Puertito de Güímar and a list that includes a new space for the 2 and 3-year-old classroom at the Agache school; the roof of one of the sports courts at the Julian Zafra Moreno Primary School, with improvements to the stands; the expansion of the sports pavilion at Alfonso X El Sabio and the construction of bathrooms; the expansion and renovation of the pavement at the Chacona Special Education Centre (CEE) pool; as well as the replacement of the roofs of the sports pavilions at the Mencey Acaymo and Güímar high schools.

“The mentioned actions are pending approval by the technical team of the Education Department of the Government of the Canary Islands,” stated the municipal government.
In addition to these requests, the Education Department adds other planned actions to be carried out between both administrations, which, although not involving the construction of a new infrastructure, do contribute to the maintenance and conservation of Güímar’s schools and institutes.
Current Situation

Currently, the municipality has two Secondary Education Institutes, a Official School of Languages, an Adult Education Centre, a Municipal Infant School, a Special Education Centre, and five Nursery and Primary Education Centres. Taking into account the number of educational centres, the projection of the municipality’s student population, and the Education Department’s planning, the next investment in a new infrastructure would focus on a new centre in El Puertito.

The Education Department itself, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports stated that Güímar is not part of the emergency plan to enhance educational infrastructures in the south of Tenerife but “other measures not included in the plan are planned.” In the case of Güímar, “there is a possibility of establishing a CEO in El Puertito in the future.”
