The industrial wastewater treatment plant at the Granadilla Industrial Estate has commenced operations and started discharging purified water into the sea on the 3rd of this month. Its commencement represents a quantitative and qualitative enhancement in the level of sanitation and treatment of sewage waters. It will cater to both the already urbanized sectors of the industrial complex and the future urban developments, as well as the facilities of the Port of Granadilla and DISA company.

Built by the UTE formed by Ferrovial Construcción SA and Cadagua SA, the Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant (Edari) at the Granadilla Industrial Estate was executed with a budget of 6,935,083 euros. Its treatment capacity will reach 20,477 cubic meters of water per day, although in the first year of operation, the average daily flow of treated sewage will be 714.67 cubic meters per day. After 10 years, this figure will increase to around 1,117.26 cubic meters due to the expansion of the Industrial Estate and the incorporation of the flows generated by the Port of Granadilla. After 30 years since starting operations, the plant will produce an average daily flow of 3,416.03 cubic meters, as full occupancy of the plots is anticipated, requiring the expansion of some equipment that make up the Edari.

The plant is authorized by the Vice-Ministry of Climate Change and Ecological Transition, it began discharging purified water into the sea on the 3rd of June, and is currently undertaking the Effluent Monitoring and Control Plan required by the mentioned authorization.

Inaugural Ceremony

Yesterday saw the official inauguration of this infrastructure by the Industry Councillor of the Cabildo, Manuel Fernández, and the Vice-Councillor of Economy and Internationalization of the Government of the Canary Islands, Gustavo González de Vega, acting as president and vice-president, respectively, of the Board of Directors of the Industrial Estate. Also present were, among others, the Environmental Councillor of the Granadilla de Abona Town Council, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, and the manager of the Estate, Gerardo López.

The Industry Councillor of the Cabildo and president of the Board of Directors of the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Manuel Fernández, stated that “this is a very important day for Tenerife because we achieve, on the one hand, an environmental commitment, providing coverage not only to the estate but also to the port and to ITER, something essential, considering that the Cabildo works intensively towards having a more sustainable Island.”

Regarding the steps to further develop the Industrial Estate, Manuel Fernández indicated, “right now we are working on the island’s interest project of expanding the estate.” In this regard, he announced, “we are going to double the industrial land of the Granadilla Industrial Estate, something very necessary to reaffirm the commitment to the industrial sector as a fundamental activity for economic diversification.” On this matter, he recalled that “the industrial sector currently comprises of 1,300 companies, generating over 17,000 direct jobs and 50,000 indirect jobs.”

The Industry and Internationalization Vice-Councillor of the Government of Canary Islands and vice-president of the Board of Directors of the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Gustavo González de Vega, expressed, “congratulations to the Estate for the project and appreciating all the effort that has been made by the Cabildo to ensure, through this treatment plant, the balance between industrial development and sustainable development.”

González de Vega concluded, “for the Government of the Canary Islands, the strategy of circular economy and blue economy that we are jointly developing is a priority, and this is one of the best examples, as this infrastructure guarantees the future development of the estate, the Port of Granadilla, and the entire surrounding area.”

The entire industrial wastewater treatment plant is equipped with automation and control instrumentation that ensures the monitoring and verification of all treatment and discharge parameters.

The purified water travels from the plant to the Port of Granadilla, where the company Polígono Industrial de Granadilla, SA has an administrative concession to occupy the terrain where the drainage pipeline runs until it reaches the seabed where the effluent discharge takes place around the 35-meter mark under the sea through the submarine outfall, which has 6 lateral diffusers and one diffuser at the tip.

The project inaugurated yesterday is named Completion of the drainage pipeline and new EDARI of the Granadilla Industrial Estate.
