SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 18th June (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Council of Tenerife, in collaboration with the Institute of Social and Socio-Health Care (IASS), will designate 804,000 Euros for the Social Tourism 2024 initiative aimed at the elderly population of the island, as part of a partnership agreement between the IASS and 22 municipalities across the island.
Social Action Minister, Águeda Fumero, underlined that this marks “a further commitment by the island’s Institution to enhance the well-being of individuals, particularly the elderly in Tenerife, with an estimated 1,072 elderly individuals benefiting from the programme”.
The Social Tourism 2024 initiative is set to commence in September, with various groups being able to embark on trips until March 2025. The programme involves an 8-day trip to Cantabria, a destination selected for its connectivity, accessibility, and essential services required for this form of tourism.
Águeda Fumero highlighted that this project aims to provide access for vulnerable groups to recreational and cultural activities from an inclusive perspective. He also mentioned that the Council contributes 34% of the total budget, while the local councils and beneficiaries together cover the remaining 66%.
The councillor noted that this year, 22 out of the 31 municipalities on the island took part, with allocation of slots based on the percentage of the population aged over 64 in each municipality, along with the demand for places. “We have accommodated all requests, with certain criteria favouring individuals facing economic challenges alongside setting an income limit for registered elderly participants,” she elaborated.
To be eligible for the programme, seniors must be at least 65 years old or reach that age during the trip year, have been registered in the municipality for three years, and meet specified income criteria. Priority is given to low-income households and elderly individuals who did not partake in the previous edition.
