On Monday at 11 a.m., Santa Cruz will be the setting for the first taxi tagoror assembly, with representatives from associations in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and professionals from various Canarian towns coming together to launch a new initiative within the taxi community, known as Taxi Yes Canarias. The primary goal is to foster regional unity to tackle the significant challenges currently faced by the industry, particularly due to piracy and the looming presence of Tourist Vehicles with Drivers (VTC).
Organizers point out that, “after a year of existence, we have successfully kept the taxi sector informed, established connections across municipalities and islands, become the focal point of discussions, and led a slow procession on December 5, which saw around 250 taxis participating. As a result, we feel compelled to mobilise resistance following recent reports about the encroachment of VTC companies through legal means.”
They highlight, “alongside this issue, we are also grappling with the unregulated rise in pirate passenger services and the pressing matter of insurance for autotaxi vehicles. These are concerns that affect the entire taxi industry and we aim to act as a unifying force, harnessing momentum to navigate through a constantly evolving mobility market that grows increasingly competitive.”
The team at Taxi Yes Canarias believes that, “while administrative measures are crucial in defending services of public interest, we must also focus on rallying taxi drivers as this battle is fought and won on the streets, by taking a stance and devising an enhancement strategy.”
