Drivers entering the city via the TF-5 Northern Highway are no longer greeted by the large illuminated sign bearing the name of Santa Cruz. The sign, which had been in place since 2022 on the side of the access bridge near the Acidalio Lorenzo swimming pool at the beginning of Tres de Mayo Avenue, was taken down by the council last Thursday. This action was prompted by the risk posed when one of the letters, specifically the letter Z, almost detached and could have fallen onto the road. Firefighters and the Local Police had to intervene to secure the sign and manage traffic flow, as reported by DIARIO DE AVISOS.
Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, cited “safety” reasons for the removal of the sign. He also announced that the council is already planning a new welcome sign design, which will be installed in the same location as the previous one once finalized.
On the previous Wednesday evening, firefighters from the consortium had to reinforce all the letters of the Santa Cruz sign on the bridge after spotting that one letter was on the verge of falling. This situation led to the temporary closure of Tres de Mayo and one of the access lanes on the bridge, due to the potential risk of collapse.
