The Canary Islands Government has decided this Monday to take on, using its own funds, the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in the San Blas area of the municipality of Candelaria, one of the locations highlighted by the European Commission in its demand against Spain for failing to meet sanitation regulations in thirteen areas of the Tenerife island.
As reported by the Administration in a statement, the measure approved this Monday allows for the transfer of 1.71 million Euros between chapters 6 and 7 of the budget of the Department of Territorial Policy, as the subsidy to the Tenerife Water Council could not be fully completed during 2023 due to issues with the initial project.
For this reason, it explains, the Canary Islands Government has decided to intervene using its own funds from the Department of Territorial Policy and Water “to prevent further delays”.
The sum of 1.71 million Euros will be allocated to the drafting of the project and the initial stages of its implementation, as the total cost of this intervention is yet to be determined and will be known in September, when the updated project is expected to be available.
Once the project is drafted and after overcoming the necessary contracting phases, it is expected that work on this matter can commence throughout 2025.
The Minister of Territorial Policy, Manuel Miranda, has stated that the Canary Islands Government “will not turn a blind eye to cases that could end up leading to additional costs for all Canarians” and, consequently, has decided to “take the lead in its resolution”.

He also expressed his gratitude for the work of both the officials of the Candelaria City Council and those of the Tenerife Water Council, with whom they have been coordinating “from the very beginning” and whose collaboration “will be essential to complete this project”.
