SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10th June (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo of Tenerife has officially joined the declaration aimed at managing large forest fires in Spain, a comprehensive document comprising 15 points to tackle the current situation faced by the country’s mountainous regions.
This decision was made during the Tenerife Forestry Days ceremony held last week, graced by Blanca Pérez, the councillor of the Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergency Area, Rosa Planelles, a Board of Trustees member of the Pau Costa Foundation, and Pedro Martínez, the head of Cabildo’s Forest Management technical service.
In a statement, Blanca Pérez highlights that the declaration, led by the Pau Costa Foundation, stems from the recognition that Spain is dealing with a “complex issue” exacerbated by climate change, leading to increasingly intense fires with unprecedented ecological and social repercussions.
Pérez explains, “Addressing the challenge of large forest fires requires solutions based on scientific data, operational experiences, and territorial needs, not on mere beliefs or incomplete discourses. As a society, we are duty-bound to confront this challenge, a stance supported by the Cabildo de Tenerife, integrated into its forest management.”
The declaration is informed by scientific data, operational insights, and territorial requirements, drawing on outcomes from the Forum for Debate and Action Proposals on managing large forest fires in Spain, hosted in Madrid in March 2023 by the Pau Costa Foundation. The forum engaged experts from various sectors and regions within the forest fire community.
