SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 9 June (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canary Islands’ President, Fernando Clavijo, is calling on the public to cast their votes in the European elections scheduled for this Sunday. “Our future in Europe hangs in the balance. The decisions taken in the upcoming years will be crucial for the common agricultural policy, mobility, transport, infrastructure, and the demographic challenge. It is essential for us to ensure that the voice of the Canarian people is heard in Brussels. I urge everyone to take the time today to visit their polling station, participate, and vote,” he emphasized.

Clavijo acknowledged that the current electoral campaign has been challenging, partly due to voter apathy. He stressed the importance of voter turnout in the Canary Islands, where specific EU treaties recognise the region’s unique status as an outermost region under Article 349. The Canary Islands is the only outermost region within Spain, making it vital for the Canarian population to ensure that Europe continues to respect their distinctiveness.

The President expressed concerns about potential low voter turnout due to fatigue from numerous recent electoral processes. However, he pointed out that during the 2019 elections, which coincided with local and regional elections, voter participation was higher.

Clavijo highlighted key issues in the upcoming European elections such as immigration policies and the next budgetary cycle, underscoring the necessity for Canarians to exercise their voting rights to ensure their “voice” and “influence in Europe”.
