UNEMPLOYMENT IN EL ROSARIO TENERIFE | Fewer than a thousand jobless for the first time in over 15 years in El Rosario

The municipality of El Rosario closed the past month of May with an unemployment rate of 11.36% and 990 people unemployed, a figure (below 1,000) that had not been reached for more than 16 years – specifically since May 2008 – and which represents a 7% reduction compared to the same month of the previous year when 1,065 people were unemployed.

Furthermore, El Rosario improves the unemployment reduction data at the island and regional level, which represents a decrease of 6.3% in the case of Tenerife and 5.9% in the case of Canary Islands, compared to the aforementioned 7% decrease in El Rosario.

The mayor of El Rosario, Escolástico Gil, highlights that “in terms of employment, the local government of El Rosario has been committed from the very beginning to promoting job training and creating employment and employability plans.” The mayor emphasizes that, “although local administrations do not have direct competencies in employment, municipalities can promote job reconversion through training and allocate resources to take advantage of the employment plans offered each year by the Canary Islands Employment Service, which is what we have been doing since 2015.”

In this regard, Gil points out in a press release that three new PFAEs have already started this year and the Social Employment Plan, in addition to the First Work Experience project, subsidized by the First Professional Experiences Project in the Public Administrations of the Canary Islands within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, for hiring young people between 16 and 30 years old with no work experience.

The quantitative analysis of the unemployment data in May 2024 shows that, of the mentioned 990 people unemployed in the municipality, 57.58% are women (570) and 42.42% are men (420). Regarding educational levels, 44.29% have primary education; 37.82% secondary education; 10.62% university studies, and 7.28% vocational training. In addition, the greatest decrease in unemployment occurs among those under 25 with 15.3% less than in the same month of 2023.

Lastly, the annual percentage of long-term unemployed people also decreased by 6.52%.
