SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Antonio Valbuena, has asked Parliament this Thursday that there be “speed” in the processing of the Canarian law on climate change and that it also be approved unanimously.

In a press conference on the occasion of the entry of the bill in the regional Chamber, he recognized that it is a “complex” text but necessary to be able to develop all the instruments and programs included in order to face climate change in the archipelago.

Valbuena believes that it is possible to reach unanimity given that there are no political forces represented in Parliament that are dedicated to “torpedoing” initiatives like this in other parliaments and he was convinced that the Canary Islands will soon be the fourth autonomous community to have a law of climate change.

The counselor has commented that the Canarian text is the “most ambitious” of all those approved in Spain, including state law.

Together, it is about meeting five main objectives: to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and be neutral in emissions by 2040 – ten years before the EU target -; decrease in the consumption of fossil fuels; open a new energy model that ends monopolies; take measures that mitigate the effects of climate change and adapt them to the islands and achieve climate governance.
