The new public social housing map on the island will be completed during the current term with Coalition Canaria and the Popular Party in the island’s government (2023-2027), according to the forecast of the Tenerife Island Council, which allocates more than 12.5 million Euros to go from 0 to 229 protected apartments for rent in fifteen municipalities.

The Island Corporation is promoting, through the Activa Vivienda 2024 Program, budget allocations for those municipalities to acquire completed or pending developments and make them available to the people of Tenerife – the current list is of 13,000 applicants – under social rental arrangements. The funds complement those of the municipalities that finance part of the planned actions.

A local perspective. The Vice President of the Council, Lope Afonso, points out that “we expect to increase the offering of public rental housing so that municipalities, who know their population’s reality best, can inform us of which properties they could acquire for this purpose.” Currently, “there are 229 homes that will be made available, benefiting almost 1,000 people from Tenerife,” Afonso adds.

Priority. The Housing Councillor, Sonia Hernández, states that “we have prioritised municipal proposals that manage to bring housing into the rental market in the shortest time possible.” For this reason, she mentions that the amounts have been divided into three categories: “Purchase of housing, purchase that also includes completion works, and construction of new homes.”

Criteria. Based on these criteria, the total of 12,527,543 Euros is distributed. The Council allocates 1,855,626 Euros to the municipalities acquiring housing (31), distributed as follows: San Miguel for 23 houses; La Guancha, 5; and Arico, 3. For the purchase of housing with completion works (107), a total of 5,551,248 Euros is injected. This includes the situation of Santa Úrsula for 26 properties; Santa Cruz de Tenerife for 25; Güímar for 20; Buenavista del Norte and Granadilla de Abona, 15 each, and El Tanque, 6.

Finally, for the construction of housing (91), the amount reaches 5,120,668 Euros. These will be carried out in La Laguna (29 buildings); La Matanza (24); La Orotava (20); El Sauzal and Santiago del Teide, 8 each, and Los Silos with 2. The beneficiary municipalities commit, directly or through transfer to the Canarian Housing Institute, to manage them for rental purposes. Those opting for self-management will attend to the demand lists of each municipality.

The process. The process began on February 7th, and initially, 18 of the 31 Tenerife municipalities submitted applications. Proposals for Puerto de la Cruz, La Victoria, and Arona were later rejected due to various administrative processing circumstances. Out of the 18 requests, two did not meet the required amendments in the submitted documents. Specifically, Tacoronte and San Juan de la Rambla. Guía de Isora was also excluded later for not meeting the requested requirements as “indispensable”.

Government Council. The intention is to present the dossier for the second phase of grants to the next Government Council. The budget is 7,527,442 Euros for 151 homes following the initial 4,4656,626 to the first six municipalities.
