“Smart Pedestrian Crossings” Cause Traffic Disruptions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has announced traffic changes commencing this Monday on Núñez de la Peña Street. Due to the installation of the first “three smart pedestrian crossings,” the road will be completely shut down, and parking will be prohibited along the entire affected stretch for a minimum of seven days.

The specific work areas are situated on Núñez de la Peña Street, spanning from the intersection with García Lorca Street to José Espinosa Cambreling Street, which will be closed off. The entry to Núñez de la Peña Street in the upward direction will also be restricted, with traffic redirected from García Lorca Street through Núñez de la Peña Street in the downward direction, exiting via Vizconde de Buen Paso Street or José Peña Hernández Street.

Only school transport and residents will be granted access. Additionally, at the junction of García Lorca Street and Poeta Gutiérrez Albelo Street, entrance to Núñez de la Peña Street will be prohibited, allowing only school transport and residents to enter. Parking will also be reserved on Núñez de la Peña Street between the intersection with García Lorca Street and José Espinosa Cambreling Street.

Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, stated, “These traffic devices will significantly reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents on certain city streets. Our priority is to implement all safety measures to make the city a safer and more modern place.”

A total of 340,000 Euros have been invested in the city to install 23 smart pedestrian crossings, comprising two light plates at each end of the white line of the crossing, activated by ground lighting in the presence of pedestrians.
