SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 31st May (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tenerife Tram marks its 17th anniversary this Sunday after serving over 240 million passengers, with an average of 90,000 passengers every day and reaching 66% of the local population in Santa Cruz and La Laguna.

Metrotenerife, the tram-operating company under the Cabildo, is launching the anniversary campaign ‘We are celebrating 17 years with you’, which can be seen onboard the trams, on the network stop ‘mupis’, and across the company’s social media platforms.

Line 1 Santa Cruz-La Laguna was inaugurated on June 2, 2027, connecting the heart of Santa Cruz de Tenerife from the interchange to the centre of La Laguna, with the Avenida de La Trinidad stop.

Two years later, in 2009, Line 2 extended the service to include the neighbourhoods of La Cuesta, Taco, and Tíncer.

Metrotenerife meticulously developed both lines with full redevelopment, both above and below ground, covering 16 kilometres throughout the network.

Currently, the tram service sees an average of approximately 90,000 daily passengers, which is an increase of 14,000 compared to the end of 2023.

Specifically, in the last year, there was a 51.22% rise in demand, reaching a total of 22,668,132 users, as reported by Metrotenerife.

Line 1 remains the primary service of the network and continues to cater to the majority of passengers, with 90% of all tram riders using this line.

Over the 17 years of service, the Tenerife Tram has boasted impressive figures for a network with only two lines and a 16-kilometre route, including over 240 million passengers, almost 2.5 million commercial trips, and 24 million kilometres travelled.

These statistics underline the positive impact of the service, linking key socio-economic hubs in the metropolitan area and showcasing the community’s embrace of guided transport and sustainable mobility.

According to the latest Mobility and Demand Study of the Tenerife Tram (November 2023), passengers continue to give high ratings to the service, with the environment (8.40) and punctuality (8.36) standing out as key aspects with the highest level of satisfaction and recognition from travellers.

Furthermore, thanks to years of experience, Metrotenerife has established itself as a leading guided transport operator and technical consultancy firm, enabling it to work on mobility projects across four continents.

Furthermore, it has spearheaded a significant R&D&i programme with the development of engineering solutions and technological systems, including SIMOVE, Vía-Móvil, or the Insulating Jacket for Rail, which are currently being exported and sold in the global railway sector.
