The reopening of the parking lot at the former San Benito station was announced by the City Council of La Laguna. With more than one hundred spaces, the space has been revamped after the completion of demolition work on the previous metal canopy. This response comes following the neighbourhood’s request, as detailed on social media.

Due to the risk of detachment of certain components of the metal structure of the canopy, this parking lot had been closed since April of the previous year and fenced off as a precautionary measure. In April of the current year, the council initiated the reopening process through the Works Department. The two-day demolition of the metal canopy, followed by the clearance of all materials from the site, occurred. Over the past two weeks, efforts have been made to repave the surroundings, allocate parking spaces, and install public lighting to reinstate the area as a functional car park.

The dimensions of the former station’s metal roof were 1,241 square meters with a weight of 40 tons of iron, which will be recycled. The total cost of the renovations amounted to 41,197 euros. The building stands on a 7,150 square meter plot, with 1,022 meters constructed, boasting a heritage value exceeding two million.

At the outset of the canopy dismantling, La Laguna’s mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, emphasised that this was the “initial phase in the transformation of the old station”. The station, neglected for over a decade, will be converted into the new Local Police station following an agreement made last year with the Government of the Canary Islands. With a focus on providing the agents with modern and functional facilities, an elaborate project is underway to meet all their requirements, highlighted the president.
