SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29th May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Seismic Network of the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan) has identified a series of seismic activity in the heart of Tenerife with a number of minor earthquakes, totaling 26 successfully located events.

The hypocenters are primarily situated in the southwest region of the Las Cañadas del Teide caldera, at depths ranging from 5 to 10 kilometers, with the largest registered magnitude at 1.2, Involcan stated in a release distributed across social media platforms.

Involcan underlines that since June 2017, the island has witnessed a rise in microseismic activity within its interior, recording a sum of 113 swarms of low magnitude earthquakes, with three of them classified as hybrid seismic incidents.

The institute suggests that this rise “is likely due to a pressurization process of the volcanic-hydrothermal system, probably associated with the release of magmatic gases into the system.”

Nonetheless, it clarifies that this seismic activity “poses no threat to the local population and does not indicate any change in the likelihood of a volcanic eruption in Tenerife in the near future.”
