The seismic network of the Volcanological Institute of Canary Islands (Involcan) has detected a swarm of earthquakes within Tenerife consisting of dozens of small earthquakes, of which 26 have been located in the southwest sector of the Las Cañadas del Teide caldera.

According to the volcanic institute, the swarm was detected by the seismic network between 01:42 and 06:08 hours Canary Islands time this Tuesday.

The swarm has consisted of several dozens of small earthquakes of which 26 have been located, and the hypocentres of these tremors are concentrated in the southwest sector of the Las Cañadas caldera, at depths between 5 and 10 kilometres, with the maximum magnitude observed being 1.2.

Involcan has highlighted that since June 2017, Tenerife has experienced an increase in microseismic activity within the island.

This increase has also been characterised by the occurrence of 113 swarms of low magnitude earthquakes, three of which have been hybrid seismic events.

This seismic activity poses no danger to the population and does not reflect a change in the probability of a volcanic eruption occurring in Tenerife in the short to medium term, clarified the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands.
